2010 Mooring Foundation Scholar

Taqiyya Thomas

Taqiyya Thomas is a 2010 graduate of Frederick Douglass Sr. High School. For the past three years, she has resided with her father, stepmother, and three younger siblings in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. She has been blessed with the opportunity to be involved in a host of activities as well as experiencing new things outside of her comfort zone, with the guidance of her parents. Taking honors and AP courses forced her to challenge herself, which in turn gave this same spirit to every other endeavor she pursued. As a member of National Honor Society, she took advantage of the opportunity to sharpen her leadership skills and to learn what qualities truly make an outstanding leader. This past year, she headed the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society fundraiser, in an effort to raise funds for people suffering from blood cancers. As the manager, her entire team set a goal of $2,000 by the end of February. The month was cut short due to inclement weather, however, they were still able to raise $1,500 and her school placed second in the county. At the end of the day, incessant effort of the team was enough to accomplish the bigger goal; the satisfaction of knowing that they were making a contribution to those suffering. She enjoys working with other people and younger children. Teamwork has always been apart of her thinking, due to her affiliation with various athletic teams. With college rapidly approaching, she feels confident that all of her acquired skills and lessons learned will be enough to overcome all challenges. She feels that The Mooring Scholarship will truly allow me to worry about one less thing and for that she is more than grateful.
