2010 Mooring Foundation Scholar
Kanesha D. Overton
Kanesha D. Overton, a senior at Benjamin Banneker Academic High School, is actively involved in school and in the DC community. A dynamic student, Overton works tenaciously to maintain the vigor workload of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program while participating in many school activities. She is a member of the Softball Team, Debate Team, International Club, Recycle Club, Theta Alpha Zeta Sorority, and Student Government Association. From her experiences at Banneker, Overton found an interest in engineering. She aspires to become a Biomedical Engineer to provide cost-efficient medical supplies to public health institutions, hoping to decrease the cost of medical care. In addition, Overton lives by the quote, "Be the change, by any means necessary;" thus, she strives to create a change in every task she accomplishes. Overton has volunteered at many community organizations, including, For the Love of Children, the Mayor's Youth Leadership Institute, Howard University Center for Sickle Cell Disease, and the Boys and Girls Clubhouse #14. Although she is going to the University of Oklahoma next school year, she hopes to come back and open her own facility to continue to help youth within her community. Overton greatly believes in lending a helping hand and hopes she can inspire future generations to become actively involved in serving their communities.
